Old Fashioned Cookies

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup dark corn syrup
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract (I use extra)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 1/2 cup flour
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom

In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar. Add the corn syrup, eggs, salt and vanilla and mix well. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and cardamom. Gradually add the creamed mixture and beat well. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours. Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with your favorite cookie cutters. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 350 for 8 to 12 minutes, depending on size of cutouts.
