Mom's Christmas Popcorn Balls

6 cups popped popcorn
23 cup sugar
12 cup water
2 12 tablespoons light corn syrup
18 teaspoon salt
13 teaspoon vinegar
12 teaspoon vanilla
3 -4 candy canes, crushed


In a medium saucepan, mix together sugar, water, corn syrup, salt, and vinegar. Bring to a boil over medium heat until mixture reaches hardball stage (250 degrees) Remove from heat and add 1/2 tsp vanilla and the crushed candy canes. Pour mixture over the popcorn in a slow steady stream, then mix thoroughly. Shape into balls (about the size of a baseball works well) and put on wax paper to harden. Enjoy!
