1948 Original Barbecue Sauce Recipe

1 med Onion, minced
2 x Cloves garlic, chopped
2 Tbsp. Butter or possibly margarine, melted
1 can (14 1/2-oz) whole tomatoes
1 can (8-oz) tomato sauce
1/2 c. Minced celery
1/3 c. White vinegar
1/4 c. Minced green pepper
2 x Fresh celery leaves, minced
1 x Bay leaf
3 Tbsp. Molasses
11/2 tsp Salt
2 tsp Dry mustard
2 tsp Warm sauce
1/2 tsp Grnd cloves
1/2 tsp Grnd allspice
2 x Lemon slices


Saute/fry' onion and garlic in butter in a saucepan till tender. Stir in tomatoes and remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, 30 min; stir occasionally. Remove and throw away bay leaf and lemon slices. Process mix through a food mill or possibly in a food processor, if you like. Use sauce for basting, or possibly serve with chicken. Yield: 3 c..
